As part of my current Jacques Ellul deranged fanboyism, I was reading the chapter in his book What I Believe where he talks about “universal salvation”. Yup, Our Jacques was a universalist, and he makes a spirited presentation of his beliefs in this area. Spirited, but not altogether convincing: lots of hand-waving going on when he talks about Matthew 25, for example.
So I was wondering whether anyone could suggest the best biblical case for universalism they’ve come across. Books, links etc. welcome. Also any particularly good biblical cases against universalism.
I’m not a universalist, but it occurs to me that if we don’t at least partly wish that universalism were true then we’re missing a large part of the point of the gospel (after all, if God does not desire the death of the wicked then neither should we).
